The first thought that comes to mind upon reading this question is “at what grade-level of student is this question directed towards?” I feel that for elementary and middle school students, face-to-face education is an absolute must. It is extremely important for students to get at least their basic education from an actual person, not computer-based.
Whereas I think it is still majorly important for high school students to get the social interaction, the face-to-face educational experience is not completely necessary. If, for some reason, the student has a difficulty interacting among their peers and is placed in an “Alternative school” setting, then the online option might be a good plan; rather than risking the student dropping out altogether. I would suggest having high school students who work with online classes meet regularly (a weekly scheduled block of 2-hrs perhaps) in a classroom setting. The purpose of this is to offer students an opportunity to meet with a teacher to present questions or concerns regarding school work.
Regarding college classes, the subject matter would sway my decision whether or not to side with opting out of face-to-face education. In my situation, (a stay at home mother of pre-school aged twins and ¾ time college student) online courses would be more desirable/convenient. Many other factors also determine whether students would benefit from the online class option. Factors such as: students’ learning types, procrastination issues, social interaction, etc.
Allowing students to opt out of face-to-face education should be a decision that is made very carefully. Where some students may benefit from the luxury of not having to physically be in the classroom, others may fail miserably due to lack of certain resources (reasons previously stated). We must also think about the future of teachers in general. The job-market for teachers would dwindle considerably. So we are left with the final thought of, “who is exactly benefitting here?” My stand on this is moderate. I am both for and against this.
Welcome Friends! This Blog is intended as a resource for parents, guardians, students or anyone who is interested in learning more about what we do in our classroom. I will include updates, important information, unit specifications, as well as links to the school’s lunch menu, and copies of handouts that are sent home with students.
